For too long, small and medium-sized businesses have been held back by a system that favors large, vested interests. My commitment is to change that. I believe that our communities thrive when our local businesses do, and that real economic growth comes from the ground up.

That’s why I’m so proud to have championed the recent report, “Levelling the Playing Field – The Case for Supporting British Businesses Everywhere.” This is a joint effort with Progressive Britain and Labour Renaissance, built from extensive conversations with small and medium-sized businesses across the UK. The report, which has been warmly welcomed by government Ministers and advisers, outlines a clear path to tangible action, focusing on better access to finance for local businesses. This is especially critical for vital initiatives like community-led energy projects, which are so important for our transition to Net-Zero.

This report serves as a crucial reminder that economic policy must deliver not just growth, but also resilience and equity across every corner of the UK. It’s about empowering people to build a stronger, fairer economy for all.
